Kendal Calling
Kendal Calling is a music and arts festival held annually at Lowther Deer Park in the Lake District. It has grown from a two-day, 900 capacity event in 2006 to a 25,000 capacity four-day music festival. Part of From The Fields group, Kendal Calling has a number of sister festivals including bluedot festival at Jodrell Bank Observatory.
The Opportunity
When the COVID-19 pandemic led to hundreds of live music events being cancelled, Kendal Calling wanted to ensure they could still deliver fantastic entertainment to audiences during lockdown. They wanted to work with an audio production company who could deliver high quality content safely, and bring to life the spirit of the festival through unique content.
Audio Reaction Strategy
Radio
When Kendal Calling Festival was cancelled, we worked alongside their team to create a pop-up radio station across the scheduled weekend. Rather than festival-goers and artists descending on Lowther Deer Park, they instead went to kendalcalling.co.uk to hear three days of live music content. Broadcasting from our MediaCityUK studios, presenters and special guests shared festival memories, played acoustic tracks and encouraged listeners to donate money to the charities who would have been fundraising at the event. In total more than £10,000 was raised for good causes, with over 50,000 people listening in across the weekend.
Podcasts
Our team also worked with Kendal Calling’s sister festival bluedot during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our team turned the amazing science conversations that would have happened on the festival stages into episodes of The bluedot Podcast. From Professor Brian Cox talking to Emmy and Peabody Award-winning author Ann Druyan is an, to Ana Matronic interviewing one of Discover magazine’s most important women in science, we delivered in-depth talks and panels, mini-documentaries and more.
