My Role at Audio Always
As a Lead Producer at Audio Always, my focus is simple. To make every show as engaging and as good as it can possibly be. One of my most recent projects was producing Holland & Barrett’s Back Your Body, a branded podcast hosted by Ellie Taylor.
From Brief to Broadcast
Working on Back Your Body gave me a real sense of what producing a branded podcast looks like from the inside. A typical recording day started with client meetings, taking H&B through the day’s agenda and making sure everyone was aligned before we got anywhere near a microphone. A big part of that role was also guest bookings, which is more involved than it might sound. It meant researching the right people, pitching a brand-new podcast concept to their representatives, negotiating rates and working out schedules that suited everyone.
On recording days I’d be in the studio supporting Ellie, briefing her so she had everything she needed to walk in and present at her best. You want the host to feel prepared and confident, because that’s what comes through in the final show.
How I Got Here
I studied Media Technology and Production at the University of Bradford, and my first real break came early. I pitched and produced a documentary for BBC Radio 1Xtra called Breaking Into The Industry, which opened doors to freelance commissions and industry internships.
Eventually I landed a place on a BBC Team Assistant training scheme. It put me in the room for live radio production at BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, working on shows with Jamz Supernova, Nick Bright and Trevor Nelson. That grounding in live radio has stayed with me in podcasts.
Moments That Stay With You
Two stand out from my time at Audio Always so far.
The first was an episode of Back Your Body featuring Sir Bradley Wiggins. He spoke so openly and candidly about his story that I knew as soon as we wrapped that we had something extraordinary.
The second was a recent trip to Madrid for a BBC World Service project. I was following some genuinely fascinating characters and recording in some unusual locations, including inside a major hospital, where I captured audio in an operating theatre while surgery was taking place right in front of me.
What’s Next
Right now I’m producing Made By Mammas twice a week, which keeps things busy. Alongside that, I’m working on a World Service programme focused on sepsis, and creating content for Today with tonies.
